“Breath Control” is screening at the Museum on Sunday, April 27 at 3PM as a part of the event, “Hip-Hop Live + Reel.” The film will play along side Dave Chapelle’s Block Party among other notable selections. Director Joey Garfield will be in attendance doing a Q&A after the show!

Doug E. Fresh

Doug E. Fresh moved to the United States with his family when he was young.

He made his recording debut in 1983, as part of the Boo-Dah Bliss Crew (with Spoonie Gee and DJ Spivey) on the Top Flight Records single “Pass the Boo-Dah”. He gained greater recognition the following year—appearing in Beat Street, backing the Treacherous Three. blow.jpgKurtis Blow was born Curtis Walker on August 9, 1959[1], in Harlem, New York [2]. He is known as one of the first commercially successful rappers and the first rapper to sign with a major record label. Kurtis Walker got his public start in 1976 as a break-dancer and a block party DJ known by the name of Kool DJ Kurt. That same year he enrolled at the City College of New York and became a program director for the college radio station [3]. Also in 1976, he joined a group called “The Force.” Russell Simmons was a lead member of that group. The Force sponsored parties around Harlem until 1977, when Simmons moved the group to Queens, New York [4]. After becoming an MC on his own, Kool DJ Kurt changed his name, with the persuasion of his manager Russell Simmons, to Kurtis Blow (as in body blow) [5]. Read the rest of this entry »

Buffy, the Human Beatbox, was a pioneer in beatboxing (using his mouth to portray the typical hip hop percussion “scratch ‘n mix” sounds). His distinctive talent was influential to the genre as well as a noticeable hook to get the Fat Boys noticed. Buffy and another contorary Doug E. Fresh popularized beatboxing, inspiring other artists to innovate, including Biz Markie and later, others such as Rahzel. Attempting to capitalize on the appearance-oriented name of the Fat Boys, another hip hop group dubbed themselves ‘The Skinny Boys’, and yet another ‘The Fat Girls’. Originally from Houston, he has lived in Brooklyn, New York virtually his entire professional career. Many fans and hip hop purists consider him to be the greatest hip hop producer ever.

The Source magazine named DJ Premier one of the 5 greatest producers in hip-hop history, while editors from About.com ranked him as #1 in their “Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers” list.[1]
